The Present in the Presence of Nubia

In learning about the past to plan our future, it's easy to forget the real gift: the present. Join Dimah Mahmoud as she shares the many blessings of recognising and honouring the present in presence of Nubia. Like Nubia herself, this session will be engaging, creative and thought provoking. Like Nubia, all are welcome to this session, especially families so bring your people. Children will be treated like the bright future, Nubia knows them to be. This and all we do at the Nubia Initiative, is really for and about them. Please bring your children, especially if they are Nubian or have been to Nubia.

This is not an invitation to listen, it is a call to actively presence Nubia in your journey. Wherever, whoever and whatever we are in the world, there's a bit of Nubia in each of us. As she resurrects on her soil, she is coming to life in each of us too. When she does, her first question to you will be: How do you #KnowNubia?

This session is an open invitation to write your story to, from and for Nubia.

For best experience: Get an unused journal or notebook, or some plane papers. Something to write with and colours. LOTS OF COLOURS. Photos, Glitter, glue all encouraged.

    Rain Over Nubia

Rain Over Nubia is the forthcoming debut album for Kaddal Merrill, to be release on Antigen Records in August 2019. Led by the disctinctive voices of Kaddal's flute and Merrill's violin their music is a joyous combination of a minimalist British folk music, pentatonic music of Nubia, and the exhuberant percussion of Egypt.

Polyrhythmic drum grooves of Sudan dance whilst intricate melodies weave bird-like through imaginings of folk tunes from further afield. This is a music that invites you not so much on a journey but into the intimate space of the music's creators, as they puzzle the interplay of culture, location and identity.

Recorded in Cairo and Aswan, the album features master musicians from Egypt, Sudan and Eritrea, including Ahmed Omar (Eritrean/Egyptian bass player and founder of AfriCairo), Ashraf Awad (Sudanese Oud player with The Nile Project), Zizo Tag (Egyptian Oud player and sometime Pauline Oliveros collaborator), Ahmed Samir Rashwan (saxophonist with RT Nuba) and the ecstatic rhythms of the percussion from Bouda Abdul-Yazeed (multi-percussionist with Hawas) and Wessam Mokhtar (Req).
