Introduction to Coptic calligraphy used in medieval Nubia

Welcome to this online workshop, where participants will have the opportunity to observe in the ancient manuscripts the way letters were made and learn how to reproduce them using the reed pen and a natural ink.

We are learning from the ancient methods of writing, when the act of writing was a craftsmanship, kept alive as a precious heritage.

Here is a list of materials you can prepare to have during the sessions. But even if nothing is available, please join us with just your pencil and a piece of paper!

Ιnks:

Walnut ink or Indian ink or any other dark color ink or gouache or black lamp ink

Paper:

A squared notebook (5- 6mm = almost 1/4 inch.) or a notebook squared paper sheet or a normal A4 paper which you will prepare as a squared paper sheet.

As a pen:

You need a twig of a tree or a bamboo reed pen or bamboo skewer sticks

Tools:

A box cutter or a Stanley knife or a common sharp knife

A fine grit sandpaper (180-220)

A common kichen sponge
